Summary
Island hopping was the strategy used by the Americans in the Pacific, to strategically take key islands, in order to secure specific points. At the same time that the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour, they also attacked Hong Kong, Singapore, The Philippines, and the Dutch East Indies. The American campaign to re-take these islands started with the battle of Coral Seas in may of 1942. one of the final battles, the battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines, was the largest Naval battle in history, and the Japanese lost half of their remaining fleet. This was also the battle where Kamikazes were used for the first time.
