Summary
After Lenin was shot in 1921, He never completely recovered and died in 1924. This led to a very large power struggle between his next two top people, Leon Trotsky and Josef Stalin. This quarrel went on for 3 years, with the guns or butter debate being the key motive. This was the struggle between heavy industry and Consumer goods. Stalin eventually won and took over power, and then exiled Trotsky from the Soviet Union. Stalin was so paranoid that Trotsky would come back though, so he had an assassin hunt him down. Trotsky was killed in Mexico by the Assassin with an ice pick, in 1940.
